Division 5 kicked off in familiar February weather, but top marks to Multyfarnham GAA as their pitch stood up to the recent heavy rainfall.

Castledaly young team won this encounter after battling back to take the lead with a Mark Kearney 28th minute goal, despite a late rally and goal from the home team. Points from Calvin Farrell, Mark Kearney, Stephen Hardiman, and Jack Kearney, settled the visitors in to their stride before Mark Kearney finished a great exchange of passes before tipping the ball past the goalkeeper for our first goal.

Multyfarnham scored five points in the first half, and would have had the lead but for some strong defending from Shane Dolan, Daragh Kelly, Emmett Heavin, Damien Stone, Michael Lynch, while Castledaly goalkeeper Cathal Dolan pulled off a number of important saves to keep his team ahead at half time; Castledaly 1-4(7) Multyfarnham 0-5(5)

In midfield Paul Costello and Kevin Stone were on top form for the greater part of the game, with Kevin Stone free kicking adding a good second half point, while Paul Costello added a fine brace of points from play in the second half. An brace of free kicks scored by Mark Kearney came either side of a fine team goal from Francis Rushe, who was in impressive form.

On 50th minute Multyfarnham reshuffled their line up and the change resulted in their only goal , a fine team effort from play.

They would have added another but for heroics from Castledaly number one, Cathal Dolan, who was busy between the post and also mobile outside the square supporting his defensive unit. As the home team pressed to find a win, Castledaly found themselves tested to their hilt, but managed to clear their lines. Castledaly introduced subs Justin Coughlan and Tom Martin to add experience and freshness to the forward line. Coughlan won a free kick as he shielded the ball from his opposite number, and took pressure off the besieged defence. With chances created and missed in the blustery conditions for both sides, Paul Costello strode forward from midfield to neatly split the posts for his team final score and reach Full time score: Castledaly 2-9(15) Multyfarnham 1-8(11).

A great start to the campaign for Castledaly, who will hit the training grounds hard to improve on the many missed chances created today.
